The British acquired Breucklelen from the Dutch in 1664 after its conquest of the New Netherland. Over time the name Breucklelen evolved to Brockland, Brookline, Brookland, and finally Brooklyn, NY.
Brooklyn, NY’s long history includes the Battle of Long Island in 1776 (also referred to as the Battle of Brooklyn, NY), the first major battle of the American Revolution (after the signing of the Declaration of Independence) and the largest battle in the Revolutionary War.
As waterfront development grew along the East River, so did Brooklyn, NY, during the early 1800’s, the city began to double and triple in size. Brooklyn, NY grew even more after it annexed the city of Williamsburgh in 1854, this caused Brooklyn, NY to grow from a modest community of over 36,000 to a major city of over 96,000. In 1894, Brooklyn, NY joined with Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens, and Richmond (Staten Island) as boroughs of New York City.
